David Berkowitz's Co-Op City apartment
Serial Killer House in The Bronx, New York
This is the apartment building where serial killer David Berkowitz lived between 1967 and 1971.
It is located at 170 Dreiser Loop in the Co-Op City section of the Bronx, New York.
Berkowitz lived here with his adoptive father, Nathan, and his father's second wife.
He moved from Soundview to this building shortly after his adoptive mother, Pearl, passed away from breast cancer.
At the time, he would have been 14–15 years old.
In 1971, he joined the US Army for three years, during which he was stationed in South Korea and Fort Knox.
After receiving an honorable discharge in 1974, it is likely that he returned to this address for a short period of time. He would have also stayed here while he was on military leave.
Berkowitz did not like his adoptive father's second wife. Consequently, he soon began to look for a place of his own.
Notably, his first attack took place in Co-Op City, at a footbridge that is just 0.5 miles north of this building.
Like many serial killers, he chose to commit his first murder in a familiar area. It wasn't until later that he moved outside his comfort zone and began targeting victims in Queens and Brooklyn.
