North Hollywood shootout location

This is the Bank of America branch where the infamous North Hollywood shootout took place.

The address is 6600 Laurel Canyon Boulevard in North Hollywood, California.

On the morning of February 28th, 1997, two armed robbers named Emil Mătăsăreanu and Larry Phillips Jr. stole approximately $300,000 from the branch.

While the robbery was taking place, a number of police units arrived and took up strategic positions outside.

However, the officers soon learned that they were heavily outgunned, as Mătăsăreanu and Phillips had equipped themselves with multiple assault rifles, handguns, steel plates, and aramid body armor.

When the shootout broke out, the first responders struggled to keep the suspects at bay, as their handguns and ammunition could not penetrate the men's body armor. Consequently, they were forced to call in a SWAT team.

The two men traded gunfire with the police for roughly 45 minutes, during which twelve officers and eight civilians sustained injuries. In total, they fired 1,100 rounds of ammunition.

Phillips put his handgun up to his chin and committed suicide after he was shot in the shoulder, wrist, and hand. Mătăsăreanu eventually died from blood loss after he was struck in the legs, buttocks, and forearm.

The shooting became known as the Battle of North Hollywood. It later inspired the Grand Theft Auto V video game mission "The Paleto Score".
