In real life, it is called the Sidebar Tavern, and it is situated at 220 East Lexington Street in Baltimore, Maryland.

This location features in a number of episodes, as it is the bar where members of the Baltimore Police Department hang out together and drink after work.

One of the most memorable scenes occurs in the episode "Dead Soldiers" in Season 3, when the body of homicide detective Ray Cole is laid out on the pool table during his wake. During the scene, squad supervisor Jay Landsman gives an emotional toast to the deceased officer.

Homicide veteran Edward Norris walks outside and hands Bunk and McNulty a drink. Seconds later, he also proceeds to get sick.

After a night of drinking and taking part in singalongs, detectives Bunk Moreland and Jimmy McNulty are shown stumbling around and vomiting on the sidewalk outside.

Bunk and McNulty — Bunk, who is clearly having a drunken existential crisis, points out that you can wake up one morning thinking about mundane things such as bills, retirement, and dry cleaning, only to die suddenly—"like that."
