The bar where Carla Vicentini went missing

This is the bar where Carla Vicentini went missing.

It is called Adega Grill, and it is located at 130 Ferry Street in Newark, New Jersey.

Vicentini was a Brazilian exchange student who was last seen at this bar during the early hours of Friday, February 10th, 2006.

The 22-year-old, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time, disappeared after she allegedly left the restaurant with an unidentified white male.

Before leaving, she told her friend, Maria Eduarda, that she was going to the man's car to look at a photograph and that she would meet her back at their apartment.

99 Ferry St
Vicentini and her friend were subletting from a 75-year-old landlord named José Fernandes. The apartment was located at 99 Ferry Street. There was no trace of this address online. To track it down, we had to translate an old Brazilian news segment about the case.

The pair's apartment, which was also on Ferry Street, was just 500 feet away.

She did not have far to walk.

Vicentini had only been living in the United States for four weeks when she vanished. The engineering student had entered the country on January 10th, 2006, to take part in a work exchange program.

Alan Lima
Carla's friend, Alan Lima, told news reporters that she had very few friends, as she had only recently arrived in the United States and spoke little English.

Below is a translation of what Maria Eduarda told the Brazilian daily newspaper Folha shortly after her friend went missing:

"She told me that she was going outside with this guy and that she would be home in ten minutes to open the door for me. I tried to talk to the guy. He didn't speak Portuguese, and she didn't speak any English."

Eduarda worked as a waitress at Adega Grill. When Vicentini showed up at the bar that evening, she was carrying a bag containing her work clothes.

Mediterranean Manor
At the timer of her disappearance, Carla was working at the Mediterranean Manor at 255 Jefferson Street. The restaurant is just half a mile south of the Adega Grill.

At the beginning of the investigation, the police expressed their belief that the exchange student made it home that night, as the bag in question was later found inside her apartment, along with her wallet and blue Hugo Boss jacket.

Sketch
According to reports, she was speaking with a heavy-set man in his early 30s who had blue eyes and salt and pepper hair. He may have been named Antonio. A sketch of this man is visible in the top-right hand corner.

Like many unsolved missing person cases, many of the details surrounding Vicentini's disappearance are vague and conflicting. Blogs, social media posts, and Reddit threads are awash with speculative theories about human trafficking.

A number of websites say that a witness saw her walking back to her apartment, while the FBI's official missing poster states that she has not been seen since she left the bar.

There are also unsourced reports that her boss received a disturbing phone call from an unknown woman who was screaming for help. These reports are dubious, however, as the name of the person who received this call seems to change depending on who is recalling the story.

It is unlikely that Vicentini left of her own accord, as she didn't take any money, a jacket, or important documents such as her passport. It is difficult to envision a scenario in which an intoxicated exchange student with little-to-no English could leave Newark in the early hours of the morning with no cash.

The presence of her jacket is also telling, as historical weather data for Newark shows that it was 28°F (-2°C) when she left the bar.

Carla Vicentini

At the time of her disappearance, Vicentini was living with a 75-year-old landlord named José Fernandes, who was a former acquaintance of her father's. Vicentini's mother said that Fernandes exhibited odd behavior, as he left the United States four days after her daughter went missing, returned to Brazil, and made no effort to contact their family. The authorities, on the other hand, have noted that Fernandes returned to Brazil to finalize his divorce.

Doubts have been raised about the sighting of the man at the bar. In February 2007, Newark PD detective Evandro Saramago told the Star-Ledger newspaper that witnesses saw Vicentini walking home by herself.

He also said that Fernandes gave three different accounts about the night in question. Initially, he claimed that he was asleep and didn't hear anything. Later, he recalled that he had heard footsteps. Then, in his final statement, he said that he had seen her coming and going.

Fernandes, who has since passed away, did not report Vicentini missing.
