"Me at the zoo" was the first video uploaded to YouTube. It was recorded by the company's co-founder, Jawed Karim, on April 23rd, 2005.
At the time, the website had only recently launched its new upload feature.
The video is unremarkable, as Karim delivers a short, aimless talk about elephants:
"All right, so here we are in front of the elephants. The cool thing about these guys is that they have really, really, really long trunks, and that's cool. And that's pretty much all there is to say."
It seems likely that Karim was more interested in testing YouTube's new upload function than creating an educational masterpiece about elephants.
When he stood in front of the enclosure that Saturday, he had no idea that he was about to record a video that would eventually be seen by millions of people around the world.
Since then, the clip has become an important part of Internet history, racking up more than 250 million views and 12 million likes in the process.
In November of 2006, Karim and his fellow co-founders, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, sold YouTube to Google for $1.65 billion.
Over the years, the platform has continued to grow in popularity.
It is estimated that more than two billion people use YouTube on a monthly basis, making it the second-most visited website in the world.
