The hotel where Janis Joplin died
Place of Interest in Los Angeles, California, United States
This is the hotel where rock singer Janis Joplin died.
It is situated at 7047 Franklin Avenue in the north of Hollywood.
At the time of her death, it was known as the Landmark Motor Hotel. These days, it is called the Highland Gardens Hotel.
During her years on the road, the singer picked up a substance abuse problem that gradually worsened.
At first, she drank a lot, to the point that many friends and associates considered her to be an alcoholic. Soon after, she became addicted to meth and lost an unhealthy amount of weight.
Her third and final vice was heroin, which she started using after a short stint of sobriety.
On the evening of October 4th, 1970, Joplin was found dead on the floor of her hotel room, which was room #105.
When her friend and road manager, John Byrne Cooke, entered the room, the 27-year-old was lying motionless with a cigarette in one hand and money in the other.
An autopsy revealed that the singer had died from a heroin overdose, and that the level of alcohol in her blood may have exacerbated her condition.
When her body was first discovered, there was no evidence that she had been using drugs. However, it was later revealed that a friend had removed the paraphernalia from her room in an effort to protect her reputation.
Upon realizing that a medical autopsy would eventually discover the true cause of death, Joplin's friend decided to put the evidence back.
The singer's death was ruled accidental, as it is believed that she took heroin from a batch that was much stronger than what she was typically used to. This theory is backed up by reports that there was a noticeable spike in overdoses in the Los Angeles area on the exact same weekend.
Her body was cremated three days after her death. Shortly afterwards, her family chartered a private plane and scattered her ashes in the Pacific Ocean.

At the time of her death, there was only one bed in this room.

Fans have written messages such as "Forever 27" and "I'm just one of those regular weirdos" on the wardrobe.
Note that this is a slight misquote, as she actually said, "I'm one of those regular weird people."

The singer was found in this exact spot, which is on the northeastern side of the room.
