The 43-year-old actress was found dead in her silver 2015 Honda Fit on the morning of February 18th, 2022, roughly three days after she went missing. The cause of death was determined to be suicide by sodium nitrite toxicity.
Pearlman had been battling depression in the years leading up to her death.
In August 2023, a case study in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine concluded that suicide with sodium nitrite was a relatively new and growing phenomenon. Pearlman's choice of such a compound indicates that she had been conducting online research on methods to take her own life.
There is conflicting information about the date that she went missing. The official LAPD missing poster states that she was last seen on the afternoon of February 13th, 2022. However, her husband, Vance Smith, corrected this and said that she went missing at around 9 p.m. on February 15th.
If this wasn't a simple mistake, then it is likely that the LAPD specifically used the date that she was last seen in public in case foul play was involved.
At around 8.30 a.m. on February 18th, a member of the public called the police to report they had found a woman dead in a Honda Fit near the corner of Franklin Avenue and North Sierra Bonita Avenue in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles.
The area in question is roughly 3.5 miles west of where she was last seen. It is within walking distance of the entrance to Runyon Canyon.
TMZ reported that Pearlman left suicide notes in both her home and car. A security guard who was working near the scene told the Daily Mail that she was wrapped in a blanket and that pills were scattered throughout the vehicle.
