The hotel where Janis Joplin died

Death Location Los Angeles, California

This is the hotel where rock singer Janis Joplin died.

It is located at 7047 Franklin Avenue in Los Angeles, California.

At the time of her death, it was known as the Landmark Motor Hotel. These days, it is called the Highland Gardens Hotel.

Room #105
Joplin died in room #105, which is located on the first floor at the front of the hotel (highlighted in red). The room is available to rent, as the hotel has chosen to honor its history. A plaque beside the door commemorates her stay. Inside, there is a closet area filled with fan messages, quotes, and tributes.

During her years on the road, the singer developed a substance abuse problem that gradually worsened.

Initially, she drank so heavily that many of her associates considered her an alcoholic. Soon after, she became addicted to methamphetamine and lost a significant amount of weight.

Following a period of sobriety, she began using heroin.

Fans have written messages such as "Forever 27" and "I'm just one of those regular weirdos" on the closet. The precise quote is, "I'm one of those regular weird people."

Joplin checked into the Landmark Motor Hotel on August 24, 1970. She was in Los Angeles to record her second studio album, "Pearl," at the Sunset Sound Recorders studio on Sunset Boulevard.

On the evening of October 4, 1970, Joplin was found dead on the floor of room #105.

Her friend and road manager, John Byrne Cooke, found her lying motionless with a cigarette in one hand and money in the other.

L.A. coroner Thomas Noguchi determined that the singer died from a heroin overdose. He stated that the alcohol in her blood likely contributed to her death.

Noguchi also noted that her room was suspiciously clean.

When her body was discovered, there were no signs of drug use.

It was later revealed that a friend had removed the paraphernalia from her room to protect her reputation. However, they returned the items after realizing that an autopsy would inevitably reveal the cause of death.

The singer's death was ruled an accident.

Noguchi believed she injected a batch of heroin that was significantly more potent than usual, as several of her dealer's other customers also overdosed that weekend.

Joplin's body was cremated three days after her death. Shortly afterward, her family chartered a private plane and scattered her ashes in the Pacific Ocean.
