The location where Jaahnavi Kandula was killed

This is the location where student Jaahnavi Kandula was killed.

It is situated at the intersection between Denver Avenue and Thomas Street in Seattle, Washington.

On January 23rd, 2023, Seattle Police Officer Kevin Dave was driving roughly 50 mph above the speed limit when he struck Kandula at this crosswalk.

Although Dave's sirens were activated, bodycam footage showed that they were not continuous.

Following the impact, Kandula was thrown 100 feet (30 meters). Attempts to revive her using CPR were unsuccessful.

The case received international media attention in September 2023 after it emerged that another Seattle Police officer named Daniel Auderer had laughed and joked about Kandula's death.

Auderer's bodycam recorded him saying that the 23-year-old Indian student's life had "limited value" due to her age and that the city should "just write a check."

The controversial footage was released to the public after an SPD employee heard Auderer's phone conversation and elevated the matter to the Office of Police Accountability.

Auderer defended his remarks by saying that he was satirizing attorneys by mimicking what they might say to limit the city's liability.

At the time of writing, Kandula's death was still under review by the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
