At the start of the series, Will lives here with his mother, Joyce, and his older brother, Jonathan. His father, Lonnie, lives elsewhere with his girlfriend.

In Season 1, the Demogorgon attacks Will and takes him to the "Upside Down" dimension. Shortly afterwards, he begins to communicate with his mother via Christmas lights.

After witnessing a series of supernatural events in the house, Joyce eventually becomes convinced that Will is still alive. However, it takes some time before she is able to convince others.

Later on in the same season, Jonathan and Nancy Wheeler attempt to lay a trap for the Demogorgon at the house. While they are waiting for the creature to return, Nancy's ex-boyfriend, Steve Harrington, unexpectedly arrives at the wrong time and becomes embroiled in the situation.

It is at that point that Steve learns about the "Upside Down" world and the humanoid creature that is terrorizing Hawkins.
