On July 2nd, 2021, Petito (22) and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie (23), packed up their 2012 Ford Transit Connect van and embarked on a trip across the United States.

As they drove westward across the country, they visited several landmarks and national parks in Kansas, Colorado, and Utah.

On August 12th, 2021, a member of the public called 911 after they saw Laundrie and Petito fighting at the side of a road in Moab, Utah. The caller said that Laundrie struck Petito twice. Another witness at the scene said that they appeared to be talking "aggressively" and that Petito was punching Laundrie in the arm.
Not long after, the police located the van and pulled the couple over.

Following lengthy conversations, the officers decided not to press charges as long as they agreed to separate for the night.
After spending the night apart, it appears as though the couple quickly reconnected and made up.

On August 17th, 2021, Laundrie flew home to Florida by himself, while Petito remained behind at a hotel in Salt Lake City. It was later explained that Laundrie wanted to empty and close a storage container in Florida so that he could save some money on rent and use the extra funds to extend his trip with Petito.
Six days later, on August 23rd, he flew back to Salt Lake City and rejoined Petito.

On August 25th, Petito spoke to her mother on the phone and said that they were driving from Utah to Grand Teton and Yellowstone in Wyoming.
Two days later, on August 27th, witnesses saw Petito and Laundrie arguing at a restaurant in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Approximately twenty minutes later, surveillance cameras captured the couple visiting a nearby Whole Foods store.
This was the last confirmed sighting of Petito.

On the same day, Petito's phone sent a text message to her mother that read, "Can you help Stan, I just keep getting his voicemails and missed calls." Although the message seemed normal on the surface, it referred to Petito's grandfather by his first name (Stan), which was something she never did.

The last contact from Petito's phone occurred on August 30th, when the device sent a blunt text message to her mother saying, "no service in Yosemite." Later, it would come to light that Petito's Zelle account also transferred $700 to Laundrie, along with a note that read, "Goodbye Brian, I'll never ask you for anything again."

On September 1st, Laundrie arrived home in Florida by himself in the Ford Transit van. However, Petito's friends and family were unaware of this because they lived on Long Island in New York.
Ten days later, on September 11th, Petito's mother officially filed a missing person report after she became concerned about her daughter's radio silence.
In the days that followed, Laundrie refused to speak to investigators under the advice of his family's lawyer. At the same time, the case began to receive a huge amount of attention, partially due to the Laundrie family's decision to remain silent.
On September 17th, Laundrie's parents reported him missing and claimed that they hadn't seen him in four days.
Two days later, Wyoming police officers on horseback were searching the wooded area near Spread Creek when they spotted Petito's body. According to one of the officers, she was "lying in an unnatural position."

An autopsy confirmed that the 22-year-old had died from blunt force trauma and strangulation.

For the next month, Laundrie became the subject of a nationwide manhunt. The legal basis for the search was his unauthorized use of Petito's debit card.
On October 20th, skeletal remains were found in the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port, Florida. Dental records soon confirmed that the remains belonged to Laundrie.
The following month, it was determined that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Laundrie's notebook, which was found near his remains, made the dubious claim that he had killed Petito out of mercy after she suffered a serious injury in the creek.
