Crime Scene Location Delphi, Indiana

This is the location where the Delphi murders occurred.

It is called the Monon High Bridge, and it is situated along a popular walking trail in Delphi, Indiana.

On February 13th, 2017, two teenagers named Abigail "Abby" Williams (13) and Liberty "Libby" German (14) were dropped off at the entrance to the trail.

Dropped off
German's older sister, Kelsi, dropped the girls off near the Meer's Farm entrance on West 300 North at around 1.30 p.m.

The pair were reported missing later that evening after they failed to meet German's father at the agreed meeting point.

The following afternoon, their bodies were discovered about 765 ft (235 m) east of Monon High Bridge, on the north bank of Deer Creek.

The victims' throats had been cut, and an unspent .40 caliber round lay nearby.

Bodies
Their bodies were found on the northern side of the creek, just south of an old cemetery on West 300 North. (Author's note: Most sources state that it was 0.5 miles east. However, we measured the distance using Google Maps and determined that it was significantly closer.)

German was naked, while Williams was dressed in German's clothes.

The forensic evidence suggested that Williams was at least partially unclothed for a period of time and that she later got dressed in German's clothes. It is unknown whether this was on her own initiative or at the direction of the killer.

The investigation into the killings relied heavily on evidence from German's smartphone.

At approximately 2.13 p.m. on the day of their murders, German recorded a short video clip of a man walking towards them on the bridge.

Guys, down the hill.
Libby and Abby were walking southeast along the bridge when they noticed a man walking behind them. He had his head down and appeared to be heading towards them. Nervous, Libby began recording with her phone. When the man got too close for comfort, Libby turned away and pretended to be recording a video about the trail. Seconds later, the man walked up to them and calmly said, "Guys. Down the hill."

For five years, the suspect was known only as "Bridge Guy."

Then, in September 2022, a retired CPS worker and volunteer clerk named Kathy Shank stumbled upon a lead sheet stored inside a desk drawer.

The tip, which had been marked "Cleared," related to a man who had self-reported that he was on the trail on the day of the murders. Furthermore, he claimed to have seen three girls that afternoon.

The man in question was a local pharmacy technician named Richard Allen.

Richard Allen
Allen was a pharmacy technician who worked at a CVS drugstore at 505 W Main Street.

Shank found this very odd. Despite organizing and evaluating thousands of tips, she had never heard of Allen's name before.

Concerned that the information had been misfiled, she brought it to the lead investigator, Tony Liggett.

Liggett was unaware of the tip. When he reviewed the sheet, he saw much more than a name.

He saw "Bridge Guy."

After turning their focus to Allen, investigators learned that he owned a Sig Sauer, Model P226, .40-caliber pistol.

When the police asked Allen why the unspent .40-caliber round at the crime was a match with his pistol, he failed to offer any explanation.

In October 2022, Allen was arrested and charged with two counts of murder.

While he was awaiting trial, he confessed to the crime to multiple people. However, his defense team argued that these confessions were unreliable, as both his mental and physical health had declined while he was in custody.

Judging by the evidence and Allen's confession to psychologist Dr. Monica Wala, he approached Libby and Abby on the bridge at approximately 2.13 p.m. He then forced the girls down the hill toward Deer Creek at gunpoint. However, at around 2.30 p.m., a local resident named Brad Weber drove along N 625 W in his white van. When Allen noticed the van from the bottom of the creek, he realized that the area was too exposed. Startled, he immediately ordered the girls to cross the creek onto the northern side, where he eventually murdered them.

In November 2024, Allen was found guilty of both murders. He was later sentenced to 130 years in prison.
