The area serves as drug-dealing territory for the Barksdale organization. However, it is smaller and less prestigious than the high-rise complex at Franklin Terrace.

D'Angelo's demotion

At the start of Season 1, Avon Barksdale demotes his nephew, D'Angelo "Dee" Barksdale, to "the low rises" as punishment for the public shooting of a rival dealer.

Stringer Bell informs D'Angelo that he will replace Ronnie Moe as crew chief.

The unexpected reassignment displeases "Dee":

"How are you gonna put me in the low rises when I've had the towers since summer?!"

Stringer tells D'Angelo that he can retake the towers if he keeps his head straight and avoids reckless behavior.

Life at the Pit

D'Angelo supervises Bodie, Poot, and Wallace, but he soon realizes there are major issues with the operation:

"This is f*cked up. Look, you can't serve your customers straight up after taking their money. If someone is snapping pictures, they've got the whole damn thing."

He instructs Wallace to take the customer's money and send them around the corner to pick up the drugs from someone else. This strategy splits the transaction.

Life at the Pit also involves downtime, when the dealers congregate on the couch in the center of the courtyard.

In one scene, Poot and Wallace speculate about the wealth of the chicken nugget inventor. D'Angelo cynically disagrees, arguing that the creator likely works in a basement for a modest wage.

D'Angelo also mentors the younger dealers. When he sees Wallace and Bodie playing checkers on a chessboard, he steps in to teach them the game.

Although D'Angelo improves the profitability of the operation, a heist by Omar Little's crew soon throws a wrench in the works.

After Omar and his crew rob the stash house, the Barksdale organization moves it to a new location.

Suspecting a snitch may have tipped off Omar, Stringer Bell tells "Dee" to withhold payments from his crew. He reasons that anyone who does not seem fazed by the lack of money was likely involved in the heist.

When Wallace and Poot see Omar's boyfriend, Brandon, playing pinball at a local restaurant, they alert "Dee," who immediately passes the information to Stringer.

Barksdale's enforcers capture, torture, and murder Brandon before staging his body in the low rises as a warning.

Subsequently, Avon Barksdale visits the Pit to reward "Dee" and his crew for spotting Brandon.

The sight of Brandon's body sprawled out on a car deeply traumatizes Wallace. Confronted with the consequences of his actions, he becomes racked by guilt and begins to withdraw from his associates. As his ability to function declines, he turns to substance abuse and neglects his work.

This behavior makes him a liability to his peers and superiors.

D'Angelo is the only person who feels sympathy for him. Although he tries to protect him by sending him to live with his grandmother in rural Maryland, Wallace's boredom eventually draws him back to Baltimore.

As the Major Crimes unit puts pressure on the Barksdale organization, Stringer Bell orders Bodie and Poot to kill Wallace because he fears the teenager will become a witness.

By the end of Season 1, the landscape has changed significantly. Most of the Barksdale leadership has been arrested, Wallace is dead, and "Dee" is in jail after being caught transporting drugs from New York.

As a result, Poot becomes the new crew chief of the Pit.
