The hotel where James Gandolfini died
Place of Interest in Rome, Lazio, Italy
This is the hotel where actor James Gandolfini died.
At the time of his death, it was called the Hotel Boscolo Exedra Roma. However, in 2018, it was rebranded as the Anantara Palazzo Naiadi.
Gandolfini was best known for his portrayal of New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano in HBO's crime drama "The Sopranos." He also featured in films such as The Last Castle (2001) and Enough Said (2013).
On the night of June 19th, 2013, his son Michael discovered him slumped over in the bathroom of room 449, which is a luxury suite on the top floor.
Following the discovery, the 51-year-old was rushed to the Policlinico Umberto I hospital on Viale Regina Elena.
Although the paramedic team and doctors at the hospital attempted to resuscitate Gandolfini, their efforts proved to be unsuccessful. As a result, he was pronounced dead 20 minutes after his arrival.
The exact time of death was 11 p.m.
An autopsy revealed that Gandolfini died of a heart attack due to natural causes. No drugs were found in his system.
On the day of his death, the actor visited famous landmarks such as the Vatican.
Notably, historical weather data shows that temperatures reached a high of 36°C (97°F) on June 19th, 2013.
If James Gandolfini had an undiagnosed heart condition, the heat would have undoubtedly put him at a greater risk. This is because the heart has to work 2-4 times harder during hot weather in order to help keep the body's core temperature at a normal level.
During the filming of "The Sopranos", the actor steadily gained weight, rising from 260 lbs to 285 lbs. There were also reports that he had serious issues with alcohol and cocaine abuse.
Sadly, all of these factors may have contributed to the death of one of television's greatest performers.

Gandolfini's room

The photograph above was taken on July 6th, 2022.
Judging by an older image that was taken from the balcony of room 449, it seems likely that James Gandolfini's suite was the 4th or 5th one from the left.
Piazza della Repubblica

The hotel overlooks the historic "Fountain of the Naiads" in Rome's Piazza della Repubblica.
Piazza della Repubblica connects two major roads called Viale Luigi Einaudi and Via Nazionale.
It is likely that the "The Sopranos" star looked out at this fountain shortly before he suffered a heart attack.
Anantara Palazzo Naiadi

This is a south-facing aerial image of the piazza. The Anantara Palazzo Naiadi hotel is highlighted in red.
At the time of Gandolfini's death, it was called "Hotel Boscolo Exedra Roma". However, it was renamed four years later after its parent company was purchased by the investment group Värde Partners.
Restaurant

The evening before his death, Gandolfini was photographed eating and drinking cocktails at Ristorante Sabatini in Piazza di Santa Maria.
The piazza is situated in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome. It is a 15-minute walk away from the Pantheon.

Bathroom

This image of the bathroom in room 449 was taken by press photographer Brigitte Stelzer.
At roughly 10 p.m., Gandolfini's 14-year-old son, Michael, raised the alarm after he discovered him keeled over in the bathroom of their suite. Six men carried the actor out into a waiting ambulance, where the paramedic team immediately began CPR.
The photo on the left was snapped the evening before his death.
Policlinico Umberto I

The ambulance arrived at "Policlinico Umberto I" on Viale Regina Elena at 10.40 p.m.
Unfortunately, the medical team at the hospital were unable to resuscitate the 51-year-old and he was formally pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The hospital is roughly 2.5km away from the Anantara Palazzo Naiadi hotel. It would have taken the ambulance roughly 8-12 minutes to drive between the two locations, depending on traffic.
Judging by the timeline and distance involved, it seems as though the emergency services responded to the 118 call as quickly as they could.
