This is a key filming location in Season 1. In the season finale, we learn that a humanoid creature called the Demogorgon has been using the "Upside Down" version of the library as a feeding ground.

Upside Down library
The Upside Down equivalent of the Hawkins Public Library is covered in vines.

The creature had sustained serious injuries during an ambush at the Byres residence. As a result, Joyce and Hopper were able to follow the trail of blood and find its nest.

When they enter the building, they discover the remains of Nancy Wheeler's friend, Barbara Holland, who was abducted by the creature while she was sitting beside Steve Harrington's swimming pool.

Barbara Holland
Joyce and Hopper discover Barb's remains while searching for Will in the "Upside Down" library.

During Barb's final scene, the Demogorgon had dragged her down into the empty "Upside Down" version of Steve's swimming pool. Her death was particularly sad, as she had only attended Steve's party to please Nancy.

Joyce and Hopper find Barbara's body stuck among the vines and a strange slimy substance that looks similar to a spider's web. During the same scene, they also see a skull belonging to another unidentified victim.

Moments later, the pair find Joyce's son, Will, who has been missing since the first episode. He is not breathing, and a vine is attached to his mouth.

Will Byers
When Joyce finds Will, he is lodged in the nest with a vine attached to his mouth.

The vines are part of an interconnected hive mind that "feed" off the victims.

Hopper frees Will by pulling the vine from his mouth and then shooting it. When Joyce notices that her son is not breathing, Hopper administers CPR and ferociously pounds on his chest until he eventually comes back to life.

The library also appears in a later season when Nancy and Robin Buckley enter the building to research an old murder case.

Interestingly, this location is just a short walk away from the alley where Jonathan Byers and Steve had their memorable fight scene.
