The house where Timothy O'Sullivan was found

Place of Interest Mallow, Cork

This is the house where the body of Timothy O'Sullivan lay undiscovered for 20 years.

It is located at 9 Beecher Street in Mallow, Cork, Ireland.

O'Sullivan's skeletal remains were discovered on January 13th, 2023, after Cork County Council employees entered the derelict property to deal with a reported rodent infestation.

When one of the workers did a sweep of the house, he noticed the shape of human legs underneath a duvet in the bedroom.

By that stage, the house had been vacant for more than two decades.

Judging by this aerial image from Google Maps, the property was completely overgrown with trees and weeds.

A subsequent postmortem examination ruled that his death was not suspicious, as there was no evidence of trauma. Furthermore, a sum of £8,000 in Irish pounds was found inside the property.

Following the discovery, a press officer for the Cork County Council said that they had no record of their involvement "in the boarding up of this property." However, during an inquest in October 2023, it was noted that a council employee did request the work.

O'Sullivan spent most of his adult life living in the United Kingdom before returning to Mallow at some point during the 1990s.

This Google Street View image was captured in May 2009. At the time, the house had not yet been boarded up. By the time this photo was taken, the house had been lying vacant for eight years. Furthermore, at least one of the windowpanes was broken.

O'Sullivan was a quiet, reclusive man who was struggling to cope with the breakup of his marriage. When he disappeared, locals in Mallow presumed that he had moved back to the UK.

Although his sister and several neighbors visited the house and knocked on the front door, they stopped short of forcing their way inside.

Over the years, family members from County Kerry made numerous attempts to track him down. However, they were also under the belief that he had moved back to the UK, as he had previously talked about doing so.

When they contacted the local police, they too expressed their belief that he had probably returned to the UK.

During an inquest into O'Sullivan's death, one of his sisters stated that the police failed to carry out a welfare check.

Letters, diary entries, and expiration dates on food packaging indicated that he passed away in January 2001 at the age of 61.

By 2009, the house had fallen into a state of disrepair.

Six years later, in January 2015, the council boarded up the house without inspecting the inside of the property.

As a result, O'Sullivan's remains lay undiscovered for a further eight years.
