The Wimpy Boys Social Club

Mob Hangout Brooklyn, New York

This is the former location of the Wimpy Boys Social Club.

It is located at 7506 13th Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

The club was run by "the Grim Reaper," Gregory Scarpa Sr., a caporegime and hitman for the Colombo organized crime family.

It served as a hangout for Scarpa's crew, who were known as the Wimpy Boys.

This Google Street View image was taken in November 2024. These days, the property is home to a foot massage parlor. Scarpa Sr. (pictured right) is believed to have been responsible for dozens of murders.

The club became the scene of a murder on September 25th, 1984, when members of the Colombo family killed 31-year-old Mary Bari.

Bari was the former girlfriend of Alphonse Persico, a caporegime who was the boss's brother.

Persico had gone into hiding in 1980 to avoid sentencing for an extortion conviction.

His associates believed that Bari knew his location and feared that she might share this information with the FBI.

To silence her, Colombo family members lured Bari to the Wimpy Boys Social Club with the promise of a waitressing job. When she arrived, Scarpa's son, Gregory Scarpa Jr., grabbed her and threw her to the floor. Scarpa Sr. then shot her three times.

Bari (right) was murdered because the crew believed she might provide the FBI information about the whereabouts of Persico (left). Persico had been on the run since 1980. He remained a fugitive until the authorities arrested him at an apartment in West Hartford, Connecticut, in 1987. Note that there are discrepancies surrounding Bari's murder, as another senior Colombo member named Carmine Sessa claimed that he killed Bari at a different social club called Occasions.

Scarpa Jr. took over the crew after his father fell ill with a stomach ulcer and contracted HIV from a contaminated blood transfusion.

His reign did not last long, as he was arrested on racketeering and narcotics charges in 1988 and sentenced to 20 years in prison the following year.

During legal proceedings, it came to light that the FBI had planted a hidden microphone inside the club. However, it failed to pick up any evidence relevant to the case.

Gregory Scarpa Jr.
Scarpa Jr. was released on compassionate grounds in 2020 due to a terminal cancer diagnosis.

Despite his illness, Scarpa Sr. maintained his position as a senior figure in the Colombo family.

In 1991, a violent internal power struggle erupted between the acting boss, Victor Orena, and the imprisoned official boss, Carmine Persico.

Scarpa Sr. was a staunch Persico supporter who served as his enforcer.

On November 18, members of Orena's faction attempted to kill Scarpa Sr. in Brooklyn. However, he managed to escape the ambush by quickly driving away.

Scarpa Sr. and his associates got their revenge in the weeks that followed, as they murdered three Orena loyalists and wounded another.

In 1992, the federal authorities indicted Scarpa Sr. on racketeering charges relating to three murders.

By that point, the mobster's health had dramatically declined. Consequently, he decided to plead guilty to the crimes.

In 1993, he was sentenced to life in prison. The following year, he died of AIDS-related complications.

Later, it came to light that Scarpa Sr. had been an FBI informant for most of his criminal career.
