On April 11th, 2011, the police discovered the skull of an unidentified woman at this site near Tobay Beach on Long Island.
The skull was found roughly 92 feet north of Ocean Parkway, hidden among the brambles near the John F. Kennedy Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary.
DNA testing later revealed that it belonged to a woman whose legs had washed ashore on Fire Island in 1996.
The woman remained unidentified for 26 years, during which she was nicknamed Fire Island Jane Doe.
In October 2022, the FBI identified the victim as Karen Vergata, a 34-year-old sex worker who was last seen in Manhattan.
Vergata is believed to be the first known victim of the Long Island serial killer.
