Hongyan Sun's former house
This is the house where Hongyan Sun murdered his wife, Shen Cai.
It is located at 28 Baskin Road in Lexington, Massachusetts.
On May 29, 2019, Cai was found dead in her family's white Honda CR-V. The SUV was parked on Worthen Road, which is just a short walking distance from this residence.
The medical examiner determined that the 49-year-old had been strangled to death.
Her husband, Sun (50), quickly became the prime suspect, as the couple was in the midst of a bitter divorce. Cai had also expressed fears for her safety and mentioned that her husband had a long history of controlling behavior.
On May 28, 2019, Cai met with her attorney to report that Sun had started hiding her personal belongings.
This was the last time that she was seen alive.
Investigators believe that Sun assaulted and then strangled Cai to death later that day. Following the murder, he staged the crime scene by driving his wife to nearby Worthen Road and placing her body in the driver's seat.
His attempt to mislead the police ultimately failed, as surveillance footage indicated that the car had been moved during a brief window of opportunity in the early hours of the morning. GPS data also tied him to the location where the car was parked.
During a search of the couple's residence, the police found signs that someone had attempted to clean the crime scene.
Forensic evidence discovered at the scene and Cai's workplace later tied him to the killing.
In February 2023, Sun was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
