Castletown: The home of Hardy Bucks

Filming Location Swinford, Mayo

The Irish comedy series Hardy Bucks is set in a fictional town called Castletown.

In real life, it was filmed in Swinford, County Mayo. However, the show's creators opted to use a generic name.

Although there is a village called Castletown in County Wexford, it has no connection to the show.

Most of the scenes were filmed near the town center, but Buzz and Eddie's cottage is located in a rural area that is roughly five kilometers away.

Throughout the series, viewers are shown establishing shots of a bronze statue of a woman who is holding a child and waving.

In one scene, Buzz and Eddie are smoking cigarettes by a bench on Main Street when Francis "The Viper" Higgins rolls out of a nearby alley.

Higgins shouts across the street and tells Eddie to return to the alley at 3 p.m. for a surprise.

The surprise is that he now owns Eddie's beloved Skyline.

However, Eddie isn't present to witness the unveiling, as Buzz, having learned about Higgins' plan, steers him away with a wild story that his mother had been attacked by badgers in the woods.

The show also features memorable quotes, such as when Buzz gave sound financial advice:

"The solution to the current economic crisis, I would say, is to go into the shops and only buy penny sweets. There's boys going around buying chocolate bars. There's boys going around buying these big packets of sweets. Buy small. Save big."

In the YouTube series, Eddie fought Higgins at this handball alley. Later, the group used it as a training camp for the annual King of the Town competition.

Many of the actors are from Swinford.

Although Eddie (Martin Maloney) and Higgins (Chris Tordoff) were both born in England, their families moved to County Mayo when they were in their early teens.

Higgins, Eddie, and Buzz initially created Hardy Bucks as a college project, drawing inspiration from the Canadian mockumentary series Trailer Park Boys. They later turned it into a YouTube show before it was eventually picked up by RTE.
