The location where Brian Thompson was killed

Crime Scene Location Manhattan, New York

This is the location where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was killed.

It is situated across the street from 141 West 54th Street in Manhattan, New York.

At approximately 6:40 a.m. on December 4th, 2024, Thompson left the Marriott hotel at 151 West 54th Street and started walking eastward toward the Hilton hotel, which was hosting his company's annual investors meeting.

At roughly 6:45 a.m., he was walking along this section of the sidewalk when a hooded gunman walked up to him from behind and opened fire.

Thompson collapsed after he was shot multiple times in the back and right calf. He was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West Hospital.

Three spent bullet casings recovered from the scene had the words "deny," "delay," and "depose" written on them.

The words appear to be a variation of the phrase "delay, deny, and defend," which is often used to describe tactics used by insurance companies to avoid paying claims.

Shooting
The shooting took place near the Hilton entrance on West 54th Street.

The footage showed that the killer's gun required him to manually cycle the weapon after each shot. This behavior indicated that the weapon was either malfunctioning or he was using an unusual type of firearm.

Following the shooting, the gunman ran from the scene.

Map
The gunman ran through a pedestrian passageway and turned east on West 55th Street. He then picked up an e-bike from a Citi Bike docking station and cycled north on 6th Avenue, in the direction of Central Park.

After exiting Central Park, he took a taxi to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station on Broadway, where he left Manhattan via bus.

Five days later, the police arrested a 26-year-old named Luigi Mangione at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

McDonald's arrest
On the morning of December 9th, 2024, a customer at this McDonald's restaurant on East Plank Road recognized Mangione's face and alerted one of the employees. When the police arrived, he was eating a hash brown in the corner.

A partially 3D-printed gun and silencer were found in his backpack.

The gun was a hybrid variant of the FMDA 19.2, which is a 3D-printable Glock 19. These types of printable firearm models are known as "ghost guns" because they are unserialized, untraceable, and therefore "invisible" to law enforcement.

Mangione's gun is visible in the image above. However, it is for display purposes only, as he is innocent until proven guilty.

The police said that Mangione was in possession of a 262-word handwritten document, which was addressed to "the Feds." The document mentioned UnitedHealthcare and stated, "Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming."

Mangione is from Towson, which is a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland. He reportedly underwent spinal surgery for a back injury called spondylolisthesis on July 4th, 2023. This condition occurs when a vertebral bone slips out of alignment.

On social media, he wrote about his struggles with chronic pain.

Investigators have suggested that his experience with the healthcare system may have fueled his hatred for the insurance industry.

HI New York City Hostel
Prosecutors believe that Mangione arrived in Manhattan on a Greyhound bus on November 24th, 2024, which was roughly 10 days before the shooting. After exiting the Port Authority Bus Terminal, he made his way to the Upper West Side, where he checked into the HI New York City Hostel at 891 Amsterdam Avenue. During the check-in process, a security camera in the lobby captured his unmasked face.

On December 19th, 2024, Mangione was extradited to New York, where he was indicted on multiple state and federal charges, including first-degree murder and "murder in furtherance of terrorism."

In September 2025, the terrorism-related charge was thrown out after a judge ruled that the evidence did not prove Mangione committed a terroristic act.

As a result, he will now be facing a charge of second-degree murder.

The legal standard for first-degree murder in New York differs from other states. Besides premeditation, it also requires an additional aggravating factor, such as committing an act of terrorism or killing a judge, witness, or public safety official, among others.

If found guilty, Mangione faces 25 years to life in prison.

Federal prosecutors are also seeking a separate prosecution that includes the death penalty, arguing that Thompson's murder was an act of political violence.
