The theater where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested

Arrest Location Dallas, Texas

This is the Texas Theatre.

It is located at 231 West Jefferson Boulevard in Dallas, Texas.

The theater gained historical significance on November 22nd, 1963, as the site where the police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

On November 22nd, 1963, Oswald shot and killed President Kennedy from a sixth-floor window of the Texas School Book Depository in downtown Dallas. Roughly 45 minutes later, he murdered police officer J. D. Tippit in a residential neighborhood called Oak Cliff.

Route
After shooting Tippit, he headed south on Patton Avenue before turning to his right and running west on Jefferson Boulevard.

Following the shooting, he headed 0.5 miles west before entering this theater.

A shoe store manager named Johnny Brewer saw him slip inside without paying and alerted the theater's ticket clerk, who telephoned the police at about 1.40 p.m.

At the time, Burt Topper's film "War Is Hell" was playing.

When police arrived, the staff turned the lights on, and Brewer pointed out Oswald sitting near the rear of the theater.

Inside
Photographs of the inside. The theater was remodeled extensively in 1965. Decades later, it was used as a filming location for Oliver Stone's film JFK (1991).

Police Officer Nick McDonald was the first to reach Oswald. According to McDonald's testimony, he raised his hands and said, "Well, it is all over now."

However, he then immediately punched McDonald in the face and began reaching for a pistol in his pants.

For the next few seconds, the pair wrestled for control of the gun.

Although Oswald managed to pull the trigger, it failed to fire because its hammer came down on the webbing between McDonald's thumb and index finger.

Oswald was eventually disarmed after a second officer reached the scene of the fight.

As he was led from the theater, the former marine shouted that he was a victim of police brutality.

Then and now
This is a "then and now" image. A historical marker was erected outside the entrance in 2017.

Early the next morning, he was charged with Kennedy's assassination. He denied responsibility for the killing, claiming that he was a "patsy."

Two days later, a nightclub owner named Jack Ruby shot and fatally wounded Oswald on live television in the basement of the Dallas Police Headquarters.
