At approximately 6:40 a.m. on December 4th, 2024, Thompson left the Marriott hotel at 151 West 54th Street and started walking eastward toward the Hilton hotel, which was hosting his company's annual investors meeting.

At roughly 6:45 a.m., he was walking along this section of the sidewalk when a hooded gunman walked up to him from behind and opened fire with a 3D-printed pistol.

Thompson collapsed after he was shot multiple times in the back and right calf. He was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West hospital.

Following the shooting, the gunman ran from the scene, cycled through Central Park, took a taxi to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station on Broadway, and then left Manhattan on a bus.

Five days later, the police arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and charged him with Thompson's murder.

On December 19th, Mangione was extradited back to New York, where he is currently awaiting trial.
