Gandolfini was best known for portraying New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano in HBO's crime drama The Sopranos. He also appeared in films such as The Last Castle (2001) and Enough Said (2013).

Vacation
Gandolfini was vacationing in Rome with his family before a scheduled trip to Sicily to receive an award at the Taormina Film Festival. He and his wife, Deborah Lin, planned the trip to commemorate his son Michael's graduation from junior high school.

During the trip, they stayed in Room 449, a luxury suite on the top floor of the hotel.

On the evening of June 18, 2013, Gandolfini was photographed having dinner and cocktails at Ristorante Sabatini in Piazza di Santa Maria.

Death
The actor visited famous landmarks such as the Vatican on June 19. Historical weather data shows that temperatures in Rome reached 97 degrees Fahrenheit (36 degrees Celsius) that day.
Later that evening, around 10 p.m., Gandolfini's 14-year-old son, Michael, discovered him slumped over in the suite's bathroom.

The teenager immediately called for help. Hotel staff and paramedics responded and attempted to resuscitate Gandolfini on site. After 20 to 40 minutes of unsuccessful CPR, the medical team decided to transport him to the hospital.
Six men carried the actor into a waiting ambulance. The 51-year-old was rushed to Policlinico Umberto I on Viale Regina Elena, which is 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) from the hotel.
At 10:40 p.m., Gandolfini arrived at the hospital in cardiac arrest.
Doctors performed emergency procedures, including heart massages, but were unable to revive him.
